Talking Therapies

“Psycho-social” is a phrase used to cover the kinds of groups and talking therapies that are available to support people with drug and alcohol problems to change.

In Somerset these are delivered by Turning Point. These groups and interventions may be accessed on their own or in conjunction with Substitute Prescribing treatment. The model of psycho-social interventions in the Somerset treatment system is supported by Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA).

The goal of CRA is to support service users to make changes to their environment which reinforce changes to drug use behaviour. The focus of treatment is on the service user re-organising their environment to increase reinforcement derived from less or non-use (e.g. enjoyable non-use activity; social approval) and reduce reinforcement derived from continued use.

There are a range of specific interventions which are delivered at appropriate times to an individual in treatment to promote their progress. Some examples are:

  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Cognitive and Behavioural skills
  • Emotional coping skills
  • Parenting groups
  • Relapse prevention groups
  • Counselling for a set period of time
Supported by Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA).

All of these interventions have an evidence base for their effectiveness and have been mapped to the model of treatment being developed by the Substance Misuse Skills Consortium. You can find out more about this on: http://www.skillsconsortium.org.uk/skillshub.aspx
